When we’re in the depths of depression or going through a personal crisis, the world feels like it’s slipping away. Everything feels heavy, and it’s as though life has lost its meaning. We become disconnected—not just from the people and things around us, but from ourselves.
For many of us, especially the doers, this feels like failure. We’re used to pushing through, achieving, checking things off our to-do lists. But when depression or crisis hits, even the smallest tasks—getting out of bed, taking a shower, washing the dishes—can feel monumental. And the worst part? We beat ourselves up for not doing more. For not being "productive." For feeling stuck.
Why Taking Care of Yourself Feels Impossible
When you’re in crisis, executive function goes out the window. Concentration feels impossible. Everything you once found joy in seems pointless. You want to do more, but your mind feels blocked, your body heavy. The simple things—like getting out of bed—become Herculean tasks. It’s not laziness; it’s the weight of being overwhelmed, the disconnection from your reality, and the feeling of being completely detached from yourself. 🌫️
But here’s the thing: Even the smallest acts of self-care are victories. They may not feel like it at the time, especially for those of us who are used to pushing harder, doing more. But sometimes, all we need to do in these moments is to care for ourselves in the most basic ways. These small, simple actions can make all the difference.
The Power of Small Acts
🌿 Get Out of Bed:
It might sound simple, but getting up, even if you’re not sure why, is an act of self-love. Even if all you do is move to the couch, you’ve done something. You’ve shown up for yourself in a small but powerful way.
💧 Take a Shower:
It might feel pointless, but there’s something healing about water. Let the shower wash away some of that heaviness, even if just for a few moments. It’s a small reset for your mind and body.
🛏️ Make Your Bed:
Making the bed gives a sense of order in a world that feels chaotic. It’s a way to signal to yourself that you’re taking care of your space, even if it’s just this one small corner of it.
🍽️ Wash the Dishes:
It’s not about the dishes themselves; it’s about doing something physical, something tangible. You’re taking action, and that’s a victory in itself.
Why It Matters, Even When It Doesn’t Feel Like It Does
For those of us who are used to achieving, these actions might seem like nothing. It’s easy to beat ourselves up for not doing more, for not being "productive" or "successful" in the way we usually are. But these small acts of self-care are far from meaningless. They are survival, and more than that, they are the first steps toward healing.
When you’re in a state of disconnection from reality and from yourself, these small actions are what begin to bring you back. They ground you. They create structure in a world that feels structureless. And most importantly, they are reminders that you are still here, still capable, still worthy of care, no matter how lost you feel.
Be Gentle with Yourself
In times of crisis, it’s easy to be hard on ourselves, to believe we’re not doing enough. But remember: you are enough, even in your stillness. The fact that you’re here, even contemplating taking care of yourself, is a testament to your strength.
Next time you feel overwhelmed by the weight of it all, remember that these small acts—getting out of bed, taking a shower, making your bed—they matter. They are steps toward reconnecting with yourself. They are proof that you’re still fighting, even when it doesn’t feel like it.
Healing doesn’t always look like productivity or achievement. Sometimes, it’s simply about showing up for yourself in the smallest of ways. And that’s more than enough. Your journey is valid, no matter how slow or quiet it feels. 🌿 Take it one small step at a time—each small act of self-care is a step toward rediscovering yourself.
